Alright, guys. It's time for me to weigh in on this whole top gear thing.

Read on if you dare.

So, the top gear of my 1985 Toyota Celica GT is, of course, fifth gear. Which should not be confused with Fifth Gear. In top gear, the Celica cruises nicely and can lug and pull as low as 50 miles per hour, and runs around 2800 rpm at around 70 miles per hour. The gearing is lovely, as you can basically stay in fourth on the freeway if you need to some necessary maneuvering and not strain the engine or gearbox. Actually at higher speeds, even in fifth gear there’s still plenty more speed to be comfortably had at a moment’s notice.

This is quite the antithesis to the five speed in my pickup, which basically feels like an overdrive in fifth gear, or in top gear, that locks you in one limited highway speed interval with absolutely no response to the throttle.

So that’s been my take on top gear. Sorry if I ruffled any feathers, as it seems there’s been a lot of concerns revolved around this gear lately.

Great question.

As I mentioned, the vehicle in question is in fact the Celica Geee Teee, meaning Grand Touring trim, or for the sake of discussion, the Grand Tour.

My Grand Tours, as it were, are basically to the bar, to Winco, a couple of parks to walk my dog, and more bars.
